Your home air conditioner can account for between 40 to 60% of your energy bills. An optimized home air conditioning system can actually help you save energy and reduce your power bills. Unfortunately, many home owners make their residential AC purchase blindly without taking into consideration the house layout, weather, and other factors that affect energy usage.
While buying a house air conditioning system, always make sure you buy the right size of unit for your home. A home air conditioner that's too large will cool quickly, but switch off as soon as the room reaches it's desired temperature. After a few minutes, the unit switches back on again, and continues in this manner throughout the day, leading to energy wastage. When your home is cooled in a series of short cycles, the unit can't remove excessive moisture in the air. Humidity levels are affected, and the damp conditions create a perfect home for mold to grow. A residential air conditioner that's sized too small will not be able to cool efficiently. You may have to keep the unit switched on throughout the day, even on days when you don't need 24 hour cooling. Always look for the Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) rating on the unit before you make a selection. You can expect to pay a higher price for a residential air conditioning system with a more energy efficient higher SEER rating, but you can make up the costs with the lower operating expenses within a few months.
